Conceptual Understandings: Diving into Deeper Thinking
Class Description & Purpose:
Students who build a strong base in conceptual understanding benefit from high engagement, sustainable learning, and better capacity to transfer what they’ve learned to new situations. Participants in this session will gain a deeper understanding of concept-based teaching and learning through the use of planning tools, assessment, and instructional strategies. These ideas are based on the work of H. Lynn Erickson, Lois Lanning, and Julie Stern.
- Participants will use H. Lynn Erickson’s Structure of Knowledge or other unit mapping strategies to plan for building conceptual understanding.
- Participants will participate in instructional techniques that facilitate conceptual understanding.
- Participants will select assessment strategies that fit best with the grade levels they teach.
Participants will create a unit map of strands, concepts, generalizations, skills, and facts that provide the outcome structure for a concept-based unit.
Refined - Practices/strategies at a deeper level of implementation. These classes may offer a new way of thinking and inspiration to implement practices and strategies to refine teaching and learning.
