Conceptual Understandings: Diving into Deeper Thinking
Class Description & Purpose:

Students who build a strong base in conceptual understanding benefit from high engagement, sustainable learning, and better capacity to transfer what they’ve learned to new situations. These ideas are based on the work of H. Lynn Erickson, Lois Lanning, and Julie Stern.

Outcomes:
  • Participants will use H. Lynn Erickson’s Structure of Knowledge or other unit mapping strategies to plan for building conceptual understanding.
  • Participants will participate in instructional techniques that facilitate conceptual understanding.
  • Participants will select assessment strategies that fit best with the grade levels they teach.
Takeaway(s):

Participants will create a unit map of strands, concepts, generalizations, skills, and facts that provide the outcome structure for a concept-based unit.
